    I once saw a man drag an elderly lady to the floor and tear her purse from her hands in broard daylight. I was 12 years old and as he ran towards me I remember thinking of Spiderman or Batman apprehending the guy. It was a split second thought, I thought of my heroes and stuck my foot out. The man went crashing to the floor dropping the purse which was quickly picked up and given to the old woman who it belonged too. I remember the crook locking eyes with me and there was pure hatred there, I felt it. As he jumped up towards me two blokes grabbed and restrained him and he was eventually taken away by the police. One of the men commended me for my bravery. He'd said he'd watched the whole thing but was too far away to initially do anything. They agreed that they were both moved to act after a boy half their age stuck out his foot and one said "that's how heroes are made." The old lady wanted to give me a ten pound note as a reward and I did politely refuse and stated that wasn't why I did what I did. But she would not take no for an answer. I was a pretty anxious kid and never had the best social skills. I remember my eyes tearing up as all these strangers clapped and applauded me. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life. With the ten pounds I went to my local comic shop and bought a batman and a spiderman book. When I got home my parents were out at the pub and my sisters were all too teenage girl to care. I just sat on my bed and stirred at these two comics thinking about how amazing it was that these two fictional characters had such a prefound affect on me. I have never forgotten the lesson I taught myself that day. If you see something happen and you know in your heart it's wrong, act no matter what happens do something if you can.

      American comic books aren't all Superheroes and Archie. If you ever read comics such as Palestine by Joe Sacco, or DMZ: On the Ground by Brian Wood, or Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughn, then you'd see that comics do have many genres like Japanese comics.

    My dad was a NY sanitation worker and brought home two huge boxes of old comics books that someone had thrown out in the trash, I was 12 y/o at that time, 1976. I spent every night for a month reading those old comics books. I still have them in my attic. Every couple of years I will sneak in the attic and read some of them. I love the smell of the old pages, the feel of that unique texture as I gently turn them, and the loving memories of my Dad who past away a year after he brought home those two glorious boxes of old comic books. Hope the magic of reading comic books never withers away. John. (Favorite comics- Fantastic Four and Luke Cage Hero for Hire)

    To be honest does anyone actually enjoy the politically based comic books? They're not the big stories everyone says are the best. That sounds more like corporate bs. Batman and gun laws. Give me a freaking break. They even say when writer's went to war that the non creatives basically took over and creators didn't even own their characters until the 90s. When did everyone start loving the government and corporations like our saviors. Even 8 years ago this documentary seems to praise that crap. All said lol I appreciate the documentary.

    • @AgentMorgan2010
      @AgentMorgan2010 7 місяців тому

      I'd say some of the best ones -- or at least most powerful -- are politically based. Or rather, at least comment on the sociopolitical climates of the time. I guess it depends on whether you agree with the message -- or how it's delivered -- whether it's enjoyable or not. But for example, I would say the original Dark Knight Returns is _very_ political, and very critical of American media, society, and US foreign policy. I would say Superman in that story is an allegory for the military industrial complex, and the ultimate resolution of the story is a rather populist one, banding together as communities and taking agency in the face of inept or harmful bureaucratic governmental control.
